According to a recent National Theatre report almost twice as many people visit the theatre every year in London as watch Premier League football. Theatre is a vital part of UK culture and yet when the summer temperatures soared to over 30°C this year, it made sitting in a full theatre without proper air conditioning particularly uncomfortable. With the likelihood of continuously rising average temperatures, this kind of heat could ultimately threaten audience figures.
However, installing permanent systems is expensive and arguably unwarranted, which is why temperature control specialist, ICS Cool Energy, installed temporary cooling facilities in two well-respected theatres on the south coast, to create a comfortable environment for actors and audiences during the recent summer months.
With sold out performances and limited space for manoeuvrability, ICS Cool Energy’s Hire Division provided eight discrete and powerful Cool Clima units to one of the theatres. The Cool Clima units are split air conditioners which deliver the required amount of cooling with an externally located unit, ensuring no heat is returned into the building.
The second theatre required an emergency temporary cooling solution and careful manoeuvrability around a low level walk-way bridge. Russ Baker, UK Sales Director at ICS Cool Energy’s Hire Division, explains: “Our engineers removed crash frames from the chillers prior to dispatch, so that we could negotiate the installation properly. We installed two rental iC-660 and two 150kW rental Air Handling Units to the site to provide effective temperature control, with each chiller individually connected to its own Air Handling Unit. This set up provides chilled air to the fresh air intake, which then supplies cool air to the theatre.”
ICS Cool Energy’s iC-660 unit offers a wide temperature range, thanks to an integral process pump with quick-release water and power connections for a quick start-up. With low noise operation and a compact footprint, the chillers are fully packaged to simplify installation.
Baker continues, “We’ve worked with many sites adversely affected by the heat this summer and we have tailored solutions in each instance. Our vast rental fleet is built to be as flexible as possible to solve customers’ problems quickly and conveniently.”
