Double-check workplace security to avoid expensive shocks this winter
Companies must double-check that their workplace security “makes the grade” to ensure that they don’t become a soft target for criminals this winter, according to Businessinsure.
The independent insurance broker routinely handles an increase in claims linked to thefts from business premises during the darker winter months.
Businessinsure is urging companies to ensure that locks used for securing offices, shops, factories and warehouses comply with what’s stipulated in their insurance policies.
The broker has been at the forefront of providing companies of all sizes with both expert advice and the most appropriate insurance packages at the best price since 2001.
Founder and Managing Director Paul Roach explained: “Now’s the time for businesses to act – the darker winter months always bring with them greater opportunities for thieves.
“Consequently, this is the time when companies need to check that their security arrangements are robust – and also fully compliant with what’s required by their insurer.
“Anyone who’s uncertain whether the locks on their doors and windows meet the required standards should call in professional locksmiths – and get those locks changed, if necessary.”
Paul added that most insurance policies insist that locks for doors and windows meet certain standards – while also stipulating that these must be put into full use when the premises are closed for business or left unattended.
Insurers may refuse to pay out if they discover that these security measures were not in place at the time of a break-in.
Paul added: “By ensuring you’re compliant with your insurance company’s security standards, businesses can honestly say they have done everything they can to reduce the risk of ever having to make a claim.
“But should the worst happen, their insurance should cover them.
“In my experience, companies that move into new work premises are sometimes most vulnerable.
“There’s always a thousand and one things to do when relocating and this can result in security checks being overlooked.
“But the best advice – whether a company has just moved into a building or has resided in it for decades – is to double-check workplace security to avoid nasty and expensive shocks this winter.”
