WJA launches ‘game-changing’ training to plug skills gaps

The trade body for the UK’s water jetting industry is expanding its training portfolio to fill skills gaps in important services delivered by facilities management specialists.

The Water Jetting Association is already the UK’s largest provider of water jetting courses through its well-established City & Guilds-accredited training programme.

It is now expanding its portfolio, adding courses for a wider range of asset maintenance and cleaning techniques for which, until now, the only option has been product training or learning on the job.

WJA Director Leanne Smith says: “These new courses are a game-changer for contractors, and for companies and public bodies that now have a defined standard when specifying the quality of service they expect.”

The new courses are: Drain CCTV, Electro-Mechanical Cleaning; Gutter Cleaning, Graffiti Removal, Remote Structural Pipe Repair, and First Aid in Water Jetting. All are accredited by City & Guilds.

The Drain CCTV course is designed for drainage contractors who use push-rod CCTV camera systems, providing coaching on operational safety, fault-finding and sewer coding to WRc standards.

Gutter Cleaning provides training in the use of pole vacuumation cleaning systems. While the Graffiti Removal course covers the use of water jetting combined with hot water, steam and chemical cleaning.

Each of the new courses will last a day. As with current WJA courses, candidates will undergo an assessment using the CLiKAPAD digital Q&A system, with a pass mark of 80%.

To maintain their certification, operatives will need to then pass a refresher course every three years.

WJA Technical Board Member Darren Hamilton says: “The courses will be delivered with the same rigour, by WJA-approved instructors, that has made our water jetting training programme respected across all industrial sectors.

“They will act as an important stepping stone for companies that want to develop the scope and reputation of the services they deliver, and promote lift wider safety and technical standards, as well.”

Water jetting training – for safety and productivity

The WJA’s City & Guilds-accredited water jetting training programme consists of a two-step process to achieve operational certification.

Candidates must first pass a one-day class-based Safety Awareness course, then at least one of six practical modules to be awarded a water jetting operational card, renewed every three years with a refresher course.

The practical modules are: surface preparation; tube and pipe; drain and sewer; drain, sewer and surface preparation; drain, sewer and robotics; and hydrodemolition.
